Summary

The mass destruction of businesses, homes and city infrastructure caused by violent riots in the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng has left thousands of young children in vulnerable communities without access to essential items - specially food. We are providing emergency aid to young children and their families in these areas in partnership with various disaster relief organisations, food and logistics partners as well as volunteers.

Challenge

The South African provinces of KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng have been severely affected by large scale violent riots and looting that took place in response to the jailing of ex-President Jacob Zuma for his failure to appear at a corruption inquiry. The violence, destruction and looting disrupted major logistics networks and transportation routes for essential goods, such as food, medicine, fuel and other economic activities. This has left young children isolated without access to essential goods.

Solution

The DO MORE FOUNDATION has a team of staff, volunteers and various disaster relief partners working together to co-ordinate the distribution of essential resources in an efficient and equitable manner. The Foundation also has access to DoMore porridge and other essential food items (provided through it's founder RCL FOODS - one of South Africa's biggest food producers) and has partnered with pro-bono logistics/transport partners to reach young children in affected communities.

Long-Term Impact

Currently we are focusing our efforts on meeting the immediate needs of young children and families affected in these provinces whilst they do not have access to essential food items. In the long term, this project will be supporting Early Childhood Development programmes whilst they build back to provide daily essential services to young children in these vulnerable communities (early learning/stimulation, protection and the provision of daily meals funded by DoMore).
