Summary

Bidi Bidi in Northern Uganda is the largest refugee camp in Africa. Only about 25% of the refugees in the settlements are supplied with sufficient food. But the situation in the host communities is also precarious. Together with other partners we are helping to improve the food situation. This food relief project supports 500 refugee families in need living in Bidi Bidi refugee camp. SCOEN will implement emergent relief to provide rice, beans, posh to the most vulnerable refugee families.

Challenge

In April, the WFP Uganda announced 30% reduction to food rations & cash transfers to more than 1.4 million from South Sudan, the DRC Congo, Burundi. Bidi Bidi, in Northern Uganda, home to over 232,000 people, is the most seriously affected. Although the UN World Food Program provides food for the refugees, the rations per household are nowhere near sufficient in terms of quantity or quality. In addition, the longer the refugees have been in the country, the lower the amount of food distributed.

Solution

The most urgent issue for refugees is food loss. SCOEN provides rice to 200 vulnerable families most impacted by not only COVID-19. The project will help 200 families to cope with hunger and improve their health. This is life or death. Your donation will go to benefit these children and family as food relief and establish Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) Groups. The project targets both refugees, their host communities.

Long-Term Impact

Refugees could meet basic food needs preventing further damage arising from malnutrition & starvation. The members take part in various workshops on financial management and entrepreneurship and save together in savings groups. The Food relief project helps them to fight against COVID-19, the primary barrier to the new chapter of their life as a citizen. Our goal is to help the refugees and their host communities become stronger economic actors who take their fate into their own hands.
