With the mission of "Waste Not, Hunger Not", the program rescues edible surplus food from the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. The rescued food items will then be prepared as nutritious meals in our central kitchens and be redistributed to serve the needy in Hong Kong. Currently, Food Angel rescues 38 tonnes of edible surplus food each week, producing over 25,000 nutritious meals and helps distribute over 4,000 other meals and food packs daily free of charge.
- About 3,001 tons of surplus food is discarded in Hong Kong every day. - Approximately, 29% of the food waste comes from food industries. - All three of Hong Kong's landfills are due to be full. - In 2014, it is estimated that 1.39 million people in Hong Kong is living in poverty, which is about 20% of the total population. - About 580 thousand elderly citizens struggle to meet basic nutritional needs in Hong Kong.
We rescue edible surplus food from different sectors of the food industry that would otherwise be disposed of as waste. Following strict safety protocols, the rescued food items will then be prepared as nutritious hot meals in our central kitchen and be redistributed to serve the underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. The project will help: -Reduce Food waste -Alleviate Hunger -Relieve Poverty -Educate the Next Generation
We work with over 500 food donors to rescue over 38 tons of edible surplus food on a weekly basis. We currently produce about 25,000 meal items daily and we work with about 300 Charity Parties to serve those in need with free meals. Our mission is to let lives be enriched through giving and receiving.
