Summary

Our project is based in 5 semiurban and rural towns, located in the metropolitan region of Bogota, where 426 families participate. We promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables through nutritional education and agroecological practices in communitarian orchards and edible forests. We provide income generation training to improve livelihoods and empower them in their economic development, in subjects as marketing, personal finance, administration and communications.

Challenge

In Colombia 54.2% of families face food insecurity (ENSIN 2015), this means that more than a half of them don't have a minimum of three meals each day, besides they don't have access to the necessary nutrients to ensure an active life and develop their capabilities. On the other hand, COVID-19 raised unemployment and gender inequality, and the war on Ukraine skyrocket food prices, FAO estimated food is 22% more expensive than in 2021, this has worsened food insecurity.

Solution

Through experiential food encounters we transform food and teach them their benefits and different healthy recipes in order to significantly impact their consumption of varied nutritious food. Also, we are planting fruit trees near the orchards to create food forests as green corridors for biodiversity conservation and to enhance the access to fruits and vegetables because they don't have the economic resources to buy them. The income generation training provides tools for financial education.

Long-Term Impact

Increase the knowledge in nutrition of 105,000 families in Colombia, improving their Food security in two dimensions: consumption and access. Consumption because they have developed nutritional awareness through the food and agroecology encounters, so they enhance their eating habits. Access, concerning economic access because they developed skills to strengthen their livelihoods.
