Help Rural Cambodians Escape Hunger and Poverty

In Cambodia, the rhythm of rural life is dictated by the agricultural calendar (the monsoon and dry seasons). Around 75% of Cambodia’s population lives in rural areas, and the vast majority of these households rely on agriculture as their primary lifeline.

While many farmers practice subsistence agriculture, selling surplus crops is the primary way for rural families to earn cash. The money earned from farming pays for essential needs that can't be grown—such as children’s education, medicine, clothing, and reinvesting in the next season with seeds or fertilizer.

At it's most fundamental level, farming is about survival. Alongside rice, smallholder farmers often maintain home gardens and raise livestock (chickens, pigs and fish) to provide essential protein and nutrients to their daily diet. This is where Trailblazer's efforts provide much needed training that can enhance a farmers ability to have better food security, and perhaps earn a bit of income.

Below is one report from Trailblazer's Agriculture Supervisor, Han Sin, who conducted training for farmers in Thlok Kambot Village, Ballang Commune, Run Ta Ek City, Siem Reap Province. The number of farmers who participated included 17 males and 14 females. The estimated number of beneficiaries is 155 persons, which consists of the farmer and their family members [based on an average family size of 5 persons].

I. Objectives of the Training

To reduce the malnutrition of families by encouraging the cultivation of and eating vegetables that are nutritious with iron, zinc, folic acid, vitamin A, vitamin C 

To learn about and understand vegetable growing techniques to apply to their farming, and the potential for increased income.

II. Training Course Content

• Techniques for preparing soil for growing vegetables
• Techniques for preparing soil mixtures for vegetable seedlings
• Sub-lift techniques for growing vegetables
• Techniques for growing vegetables 

III. Training process

Han Sin introduced himself and Trailblazer’s project to the participants. Next, he explained the reason and objectives of the meeting and started the training process on the following categories:

• Preparing the land for planting vegetables
• Preparing the soil mixture for vegetable seedlings
• Sub-lift for planting vegetables
• Techniques for growing vegetables (watergreen, eggplant, cucumber, long bean)
• Measures to protect and control crops from diseases and pests

Discussion also covered vegetable growing techniques, maintenance, use of fertilizers for crops, and measures to control pests on crops.

IV. Expectations after the training

After farmers have undergone the training course on the techniques of producing compost and plant-based pesticides, we expect that farmers will take the knowledge gained from the training and apply this knowledge to produce their own compost and plant-based pesticides for use on their crops, which can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural pesticides that affect the health of consumers. Farmers can also share the knowledge gained from this training with other farmers to use available resources effectively in growing vegetables and fruits to increase yields in the village, and which can increase income and health for the entire community.

This report is about one of Trailblazer's agriculture training recipients and the transforming impact that training has had on her life and that of her family.

A few years ago, an agricultural training course was introduced in Pong Ro Village, Kantreang Commune, Prasat Bakong District, Siem Reap Province. The program aimed to improve farming techniques, increase productivity, and enhance rural livelihoods. Trailblazer’s Agriculture Supervisor, Mr. Sen, recently met with Ms. Saret and her family who benefited from this training. Sen conducted a short interview with her to understand the importance of the training on her crops and daily life.

Before attending Trailblazer's training, Saret and her family relied on traditional farming methods. Their knowledge was limited, leading to poor soil management and inconsistent crop yields. The family struggled with unpredictable harvests, often producing just enough for subsistence but not enough to sell at the market.

Due to low agricultural productivity, the family’s income was unstable. They had limited access to nutritious food, and medical expenses were difficult to cover. The lack of financial security forced them to take on debt during difficult seasons, making it hard to invest in better farming tools or techniques.

After participating in the agricultural training course, Saret learned improved farming techniques, including:

 • Crop diversification to reduce risks and increase food security

 • Sustainable soil management and organic fertilizer use

 • Efficient irrigation and water conservation methods

As a result, her farm’s productivity increased significantly and she could grow a variety of crops throughout the year. 

When asked about the changes to their life Saret highlighted several improvements:

 • Increased Crop Yield: Her farm now produces more food, providing a stable supply for her family and surplus for sale

 • Better Financial Stability: With higher crop sales she no longer relies on loans to support her family

 • Improved Nutrition: Growing a variety of crops has improved her family’s diet and overall health

 • Community Growth: More villagers have adopted new farming techniques, leading to overall economic improvement in the community

Ms. Saret’s story demonstrates the transformative impact of agricultural training in rural areas. By equipping farmers with the right skills and knowledge, such programs can enhance food security, improve financial stability, and contribute to the long-term development of rural communities.
