As an effort to support the sector that is in charge of the arduous task of feeding Puerto Rico's population, we launched the Food Sovereignty Fund. Its goal is to aid farmers and fishers that have suffered losses due to natural disasters and tropical climate events and also minimize future loss. The Food Sovereignty Fund consists of providing economic support through grants, voluntary work brigades, and the just recovery of the agricultural landscape.
In order to survive in our current climatic and political context, we must bet on food sovereignty as a fundamental goal for the development of the island. Hurricanes and tropical events constantly expose the vulnerabilities of our systems in general - in this case our food production system. In Puerto Rico we import 85% of our food, of which 64% comes from the US. It is imperative to support food production projects since it's the only way for the island to survive.
The Fund aims to provide economic relief to farmers and fishers through cash grants for loss prevention and mitigation due to tropical climatic events, voluntary work brigades for restoration of farms and fishing villages, and landscape design recovery.
Through iniciatives like the Food Sovereignty Fund, farmers and fishermen at risk will be able to secure their work, crops, and caught fish, moving closer towards food sovereignty as a sustainable alternative for Puertoricans to survive and remain in Puerto Rico.
