The more than 960 food banks and pantries in the Tafel network in Germany support people in poverty each and every day with food that has been donated. This vital work is particularly significant now in the face of inflation and rising costs. But it is not only people affected by poverty who need help - the Tafel branches themselves are also dependent on support to remain in operation. In addition to food donations and volunteers’ commitment of time, they require money to pay for their increasing costs of operation.
Your donations via GlobalGiving will help our food banks with their specific, local needs.
By setting up funds for targeted aid, we have repeatedly supported food banks in our network in crisis situations e.g. most recently with funds to offset the costs of energy and transport, relieving them of a large financial burden..

The food banks in Germany are under enormous pressure: Many people turn to one of the more than 960 food banks for the first time and ask for help because their money is no longer enough to live on. Since the beginning of the price increases and the war in Ukraine, more and more people have found themselves in need: two million people now come to the food banks, more than ever before.
But the food banks themselves and the people who work for them have faced and continue to face major challenges and need a great deal of support, because rising energy prices are also putting a strain on the work of the food banks.
With your support through GlobalGiving, you have helped the food banks save food and help people affected by poverty. With your donations we can, among other things
- Put the food bank work on a sustainable footing
- Support the food banks in the energy crisis
- Expand logistics and implement digitalization projects, allowing more food to be saved
- Implement participation projects for children and senior citizens

Help for food banks in Germany

Tafel Deutschland is a service organization and mouthpiece for over 960 food banks throughout Germany. The umbrella organization has promoted food banking in Germany for over 25 years by saving food that would otherwise be thrown away and making sure it goes to people affected by poverty who need it the most.
Tafel Deutschland also represents our member food banks’ interests at national and international levels. Tafel Deutschland is financed by donations. The donations collected via GlobalGiving support our food banking mission in Germany. Especially the current crisis, rising prices have resulted in fewer food donations and more people in need turning to the Tafel for support.
Tafel Deutschland offers targeted assistance to its member food banks: The "Energy-Invest" support program, for example, helps our network of food banks and pantries make their operations more sustainable and energy-saving in the long term. This enables them e.g. to invest in e-transporters, photovoltaic systems and energy-saving equipment. Tafel Deutschland is setting up these and other support programs to support or volunteers and food saving operations in Germany.
