Food Banks & Pantries: Crisis Response in Germany

Dear donors,

The situation of the community organizations and their beneficiaries has not improved this year. Food banks in Germany continue to face major challenges. In the 30th year of the Tafel movement, the demand for support remains high.

The situation is tense: We need more volunteers, more food and more funds, especially to deal with increased operating costs.

Compared to last year, almost all food banks are experiencing significant growth. – One in three  of our food banks have up to 50% more beneficiaries and one out of five of our food banks are supporting up to twice as many beneficiaries.

Refugees from Ukraine, the unemployed, more and more people in employment, but also many pensioners are seeking support from food banks. At the same time, three fourths of our branches have seen a decrease in food donations. Despite all this, our network of food banks are doing their best to continue rescuing food and helping people affected by poverty.

By setting up funds for targeted aid, we have repeatedly supported our front line organizations in crisis situations e.g. most recently with funds to offset the costs of energy and transport, relieving them of a large financial burden.

With financial support from Tafel Deutschland, our local food banks and community food pantries can offer the beneficiaries projects that enable social participation, integration, nutritional education and digitalization. 

Tafel Deutschland represents the food banks at all political levels and campaigns in public for the interests of its beneficiaries. Tafel Deutschland is the mouthpiece of more than 970 member associations and engages in dialog with representatives from politics, business, society and the media. Regular publications, participationin public events and through press work, the umbrella organization communicates to the outside world the vital work of the Tafel, winning supporters for our mission

The more than 960 food banks and pantries in the Tafel network in Germany support people in poverty each and every day with food that has been donated. This vital work is particularly significant now in the face of inflation and rising costs. But it is not only people affected by poverty who need help - the Tafel branches themselves are also dependent on support to remain in operation. In addition to food donations and volunteers’ commitment of time, they require money to pay for their increasing costs of operation.
