The Gogo Relief Initiative supports grandmothers and single mothers caring for children with chronic or life-limiting illnesses in South Africa's most vulnerable communities. Caregivers often face severe poverty, food insecurity, emotional strain, and long, costly trips to hospitals. The programme provides safe transport, food and toiletry relief and creates a circle of support for those who are in similar situations.
South Africa faces a profound care giving crisis, shaped by poverty, unemployment, and inter-generational care giving patterns that place grandmothers (known as 'Gogos') and single mothers at the centre of care for children who are living with a life limiting illness.
The Gogo Relief Initiative provides safe, reliable transport directly from homes to medical appointments at hospitals in 'Sam se Bussies' with kind and compassionate drivers. It will also provide food and toiletry care buckets for families and as well as give caregivers an opportunity to connect with people who are facing the same frightening reality of caring for a child with a life-limiting illness, share experiences and find mutual support.
The Gogo Relief Initiative helps families caring for a child with a life-limiting illness by ensuring reliable transport to medical appointments, improving continuity of care and easing daily burdens. Food and toiletry care buckets reduce financial strain and support household stability. Just as importantly, the initiative creates a supportive community where caregivers can connect, share experiences and find strength in one another -reducing isolation and building long-term emotional resilience
