In rural Nigeria, 1,047 mothers die for every 100,000 live births. Just 1 in 200 rural women delivers in a health facility, while excessive bleeding after childbirth causes nearly one-third of maternal deaths. Each year, 75,000 Nigerian mothers and newborns lose their lives to preventable causes. This project will provide 3,000 marginalized mothers & infant in rural and underserved communities/villages in Nigeria to deliver monthly life-saving maternal and infant services at just $10 per person.
In rural Nigeria, 1,047 women die for every 100,000 births. Just 1 in 200 rural women gives birth in a health facility. Bleeding after childbirth causes nearly one-third of maternal deaths. Each year, over 75,000 Nigerian mothers and newborns die from preventable causes. Many are poor, isolated, or face stigma due to disability, HIV, or gender identity, making it harder to get basic maternal or newborn care. PPH, malnutrition, and lack of skilled care drive preventable deaths.
We will provide monthly maternal and infant health services for 3,000 rural women and newborns. The $10 support covers antenatal care, clean delivery kits, and postnatal follow-ups. Mobile outreach teams will serve households in remote villages, with a focus on women excluded from routine health care due to poverty, distance, or stigma related to disability, HIV, or gender identity. The services bring skilled care directly to them.
This project will help reduce avoidable deaths by making regular care available to those who rarely access health services. Early checks, safe deliveries, and postnatal visits will prevent complications that lead to death. Subsequently, more women will trust and use skilled care. The outreach model builds habits of care-seeking in hard-to-reach areas. This can shift family health patterns and reduce long-term loss of life in rural Nigeria.
