Dear Donor,
With a strong commitment to ensuring the best interests of every child, Instituto Fazendo História develops the Family Foster Care Program, an alternative to institutional care that provides temporary, family-based support for children from 0 to 6 years old who have been removed from their families through protective measures. In this model, children are not placed in shelters but welcomed into the homes of pre-registered foster families, where they receive stability, attentive care, and affection.
During this period, our team works in close collaboration with the child protection system, offering support to both foster families and biological families. Each child’s story is followed with great sensitivity and attention until a safe and lasting solution is found — whether through family reunification or other long-term alternatives.
Currently, around 25 children are being cared for in foster homes, with the support of 25 active foster families. We provide these caregivers with training, ongoing support, and close follow-up to ensure a high-quality and responsible care experience.
None of this would be possible without you. Your support strengthens this care network and makes it possible to offer a more humane model of foster care, focused on the overall development and well-being of children in vulnerable situations.
Below, we share a real story that illustrates the power of this work:
Julia is 25 years old and from Bolivia. She worked as a parliamentary advisor in her country and was the mother of a 5-year-old girl. When she found out she was pregnant again, she informed the baby’s father — an influential man with whom she had been in a relationship. Instead of welcoming the news, he pressured her to terminate the pregnancy. When Julia refused, he threatened to kill her.
Fearing for her own life, as well as for her daughter and her mother, Julia made a difficult and courageous decision: she fled to Brazil to give birth in safety. Later, she brought her mother and eldest daughter as well — but even far from Bolivia, the fear lingered.
Aware of her limits and the risks she was still facing, Julia turned to the justice system and chose to pursue a protected relinquishment — a legal right in Brazil that allows a mother to voluntarily place her baby for adoption in a safe and lawful way, when she feels unable to assume motherhood at that moment.
Julia went through the pregnancy with great care and respect, always wishing for her daughter to have a life filled with love. She allowed the new family to choose the baby's name and trusted that, with support and affection, her daughter would have a hopeful new beginning.
The baby was temporarily welcomed by one of our foster families until her forever family was ready to receive her. We supported a gradual bonding process, full of care, emotional support, and attention — respecting the baby’s pace and the loving desire of the adoptive parents.
Today, this child lives in a home full of affection, where she grows up surrounded by safety, play, and love.
Stories like Julia’s remind us of the complexity of maternal decisions and the importance of a system that welcomes rather than judges. Once again, we are deeply grateful for your support, which makes it possible to offer a safe and dignified path for children and families in vulnerable situations.
Together, we continue this mission of transforming stories through care, listening, and commitment.
Thank you.
