Restoring Safety, Care and Hope

By Pamela Fernandes | Program Coordinator

Dear Donor,

At Instituto Fazendo História, we believe that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. Through our Foster Family Care Service, we provide temporary family-based care for children aged 0 to 6 who have been separated from their biological families due to situations of risk and social vulnerability.

Instead of institutional care, these children are welcomed by trained foster families who are continuously supported by our multidisciplinary team. In this environment, they receive individualized attention, affection, stability, and a healthy daily routine while the legal and social measures necessary to determine their future paths are carried out.

Our work also includes close support for biological families and the child protection network, always guided by the best interests of each child, whether through safe family reunification or adoption, when appropriate.

Your support is essential to strengthen these families, provide ongoing training, and sustain a care model that prioritizes the well-being and healthy development of children living in highly vulnerable situations.

As an example of the impact of this work, we would like to share the story of little Mauro, a baby just 15 days old who arrived at our service after being found alone in the bathroom of a public hospital in the city of São Paulo.

Mauro began his life surrounded by instability and emotional vulnerability. His mother had experienced a history marked by violence and insecurity during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Without a support network and overwhelmed by fear, she understood, within her possibilities at that moment, that leaving him in a place where he could receive care was the most protective decision she was able to make.

In response to this situation, Mauro was placed with a Foster Family prepared to welcome him with care, presence, and affection.

When he arrived at his new home, Mauro showed signs of insecurity: he had difficulty relaxing, struggled to sleep, and remained constantly alert to his surroundings. Gradually, through physical affection, a stable routine, and the loving bond built day by day, he began to experience a new sense of safety and protection.

The care provided by the Foster Family offered Mauro reparative experiences that were fundamental to his emotional development and to the building of healthier and more secure attachments.

At the same time, our team also provided sensitive and qualified support to Mauro’s mother, creating a nonjudgmental space for listening and helping strengthen her possibilities for healing and caregiving.

Stories like Mauro’s show how foster family care can transform life trajectories by offering not only immediate protection for children, but also real opportunities for healing, rebuilding bonds, and creating new possibilities for the entire family.

This work is only possible thanks to people and partners who believe, alongside us, in the importance of ensuring every child’s right to a safe, protected, and hopeful childhood.

To our dear donor, thank you for making stories like Mauro’s possible. Your support helps provide protection, care, and new opportunities for children and families facing some of life’s most vulnerable moments. We are deeply grateful for your trust, generosity, and partnership in this mission.
