Free Childcare Service for poor mother in Ethiopia

The Free Childcare Service for Poor Mothers in Ethiopia project continues to register meaningful progress in improving the lives of vulnerable women and children in Akaki Kality Sub-city, Woredas 5 and 8. With the generous support of GlobalGiving donors and partners, MHO has sustained the operation of its day care center, which provides free, safe, and holistic childcare and early childhood development services for 200 of the poorest children from Urban PSNP beneficiary households. This support is directly addressing one of the most significant structural barriers to women’s economic empowerment in Ethiopia—the disproportionate burden of unpaid care and domestic work—by giving mothers reliable daytime childcare and the opportunity to participate in public works, income-generating activities, and skills development. At the same time, the project is responding to the urgent nutritional and developmental needs of children who would otherwise remain at home in unsafe and unstimulating environments.

During the reporting period, the center continued to provide integrated services that combine early childhood care and education, daily nutritious meals, health monitoring, psychosocial stimulation, and structured play-based learning. These interventions are improving children’s physical growth, cognitive development, social interaction, and school readiness. Many of the enrolled children previously suffered from poor nutrition and limited early learning opportunities, which negatively affected their concentration and future education prospects. Through the regular provision of balanced meals and age-appropriate learning activities, the project is helping them develop the foundational skills necessary for lifelong learning. Parallel to the childcare services, MHO has strengthened its parent coaching and family support component, equipping mothers and caregivers with practical knowledge on child development, positive parenting, hygiene, and home-based stimulation. This has created a strong linkage between the childcare center and the household, ensuring that the impact of the project extends beyond the facility.

The change created by the project is visible not only in the wellbeing of children but also in the lives of their mothers. Women who previously faced severe time poverty are now able to engage in paid work, participate in livelihood programs, and plan for their future with greater confidence. This has enhanced household income, improved food security, and strengthened dignity and social participation among beneficiary families. The project is also contributing to gender equality by redistributing care responsibilities and demonstrating a practical model for community-based childcare support in urban poor settings. As one of the few initiatives of its kind in Ethiopia, the program is increasingly recognized by local stakeholders as an effective approach for linking social protection, early childhood development, and women’s economic empowerment.

Despite rising operational costs and the growing demand for additional childcare places, the project has continued to achieve its objectives and maintain service quality through careful resource management and strong community engagement. The need for expansion remains high, as many vulnerable mothers are still on the waiting list for the service. In the coming period, MHO will focus on strengthening the nutrition component, enhancing early learning materials, expanding parent education sessions, and mobilizing additional resources to reach more children and mothers.

This initiative empowers women to engage in income-generating activities while ensuring their children’s safety and well-being. The project has successfully provided full-day free childcare for 100 children of impoverished mothers, including essential nutritional and healthcare provisions.

In addition to childcare, we have offered counseling on hygiene, nutrition, and emotional well-being to mothers, helping them navigate their responsibilities more effectively. We are also planning outreach initiatives for mobile childcare to serve vulnerable day laborers, further extending our impact in the community.
