Many school girls in rural Nigeria suffer from untreated tooth decay & gum infections due to lack of dental services and hygiene education. This project by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research will provide free dental checkups,fluoride treatments, and oral hygiene kits to girls in underserved schools. It will also train teachers on oral care awareness, helping reduce pain, infections, and school absenteeism caused by preventable dental problems.We aim to reach 5,000+ school girls in 8years.
In rural Nigeria, dental care is often unavailable or too expensive for school-aged girls. Poor oral hygiene, sugary diets, and lack of preventive care cause cavities and gum diseases. Many children live with constant pain, struggle to eat or concentrate in class, and miss school days. Without early intervention, these problems can lead to long-term oral infections and affect confidence and nutrition during adolescence.
The project will deliver free dental screening, cleaning, and basic treatments in selected rural schools. Girls will receive fluoride applications, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Teachers will be trained to monitor oral hygiene and promote daily brushing habits. Health talks and demonstrations will teach proper dental care routines. Through outreach visits, we will reach hundreds of girls who have never received professional dental attention.
Early dental care will reduce oral pain, infections, and missed school days among girls. Trained teachers and improved hygiene habits will create lasting behavioral change in schools and communities. Over time, better oral health will support girls' confidence, nutrition, and learning outcomes. This project will also encourage parents to prioritize dental care, improving family health and promoting awareness in rural regions of Nigeria.
