Join "Maisto bankas" in our mission to nourish Lithuania's communities. We rescue surplus food daily from various sources, preventing waste. Volunteers sort and distribute items, now available in free food shops. These shops offer dignity and choice, letting individuals select from a variety of items, ensuring nutrition and adding variety to meals. Empowering people to enjoy life's little pleasures and reclaim food choices, our initiative goes beyond nourishment, bringing normalcy to lives.
Food insecurity is a pressing issue in Lithuania: one in every five people is at risk of poverty. Every seventh person admits to lacking money even for food - the most fundamental physiological need. Meanwhile, nearly 400,000 tons of food are discarded annually across production, retail, and farming sectors. This paints a stark picture of food insecurity, where individuals and families struggle to access basic nutrition while vast quantities of perfectly good food go to waste.
Our project offers an effective solution to both issues: helping those in need and saving food from waste. By rescuing surplus food and making it available through our free food shops, we ensure that nutritious meals reach those who need it most. Beyond simply providing sustenance, our approach restores dignity and choice to individuals facing food insecurity, empowering them to select the items that best meet their needs and desires.
Food Security: Providing dignified access to nutritious food alleviates hunger and enhances well-being across Lithuania. Community Empowerment: Our free food shops foster community engagement and volunteerism, with up to 10 volunteers needed daily per shop. This involvement cultivates ownership and solidarity, empowering individuals to address food insecurity. Environmental Stewardship: Rescuing surplus food reduces waste and environmental impact, fostering a more sustainable future.
