Challenge

A recent study in Dar es Salaam showed that among 1,005 children, 50% had acute respiratory infection, while 5.4% had urinary tract infections & 3.3% had typhoid fever. Much of this & the related high death rate in younger children is due to preventable causes going untreated due to lack of access to healthcare due to the inability to pay for basic treatments. Educational development is also hampered by the higher rates of school absence due to prolonged bouts of sickness that could be avoided.

Solution

help2kids, in partnership with Reach Tanzania, will set-up a high-quality Medical Centre within its existing Campus by converting 3 rooms & kitting them out with the necessary equipment to run the practise. The Medical Centre will address all key sub-specialties, providing outpatient, inpatient & diagnostic services. It will act as the first point of call for all Health Project cases including initial consultation, prescription of required medicines or referral to the appropriate specialists.

Long-Term Impact

Once set-up the project will be able to provide ongoing healthcare to around 1,000 young children and their families in the local community of Kunduchi - a very low-income fishing village where many of the families live hand-to-mouth. It will significantly reduce the number of serious illnesses by diagnosing and treating them earlier, provide suitable treatment to reduce the number of school days lost and reduce the death rate within young children in the local community.
