By Chalana k Fernando | Director

Free IT Education Program – Kalutara & Angunukolapalassa

The Free IT Education Program was initiated to provide basic computer and information technology knowledge to school children and youth in Kalutara and Angunukolapalassa areas. Many students in these regions have limited access to computers and formal IT education. This project aims to bridge that gap by offering free IT classes and learning support.

2. Background & Need of the Project

In today’s digital world, computer literacy is essential for education, employment, and personal development. However, a large number of students in rural and semi-rural areas still lack:

  • Access to computers and internet

  • Basic IT knowledge

  • Proper guidance for using technology productively

This project was started to help these students gain essential digital skills and improve their future educational and career opportunities.

3. Project Objectives

The main objectives of the Free IT Class project are:

  • To improve basic computer literacy among students

  • To provide free access to IT education for underprivileged children

  • To develop practical skills such as typing, document preparation, and internet usage

  • To motivate students to use technology for learning and self-development

4. Project Locations

The program is currently conducted in:

  • Kalutara

  • Angunukolapalassa

Classes are organized in community spaces/schools with the support of volunteers and well-wishers.

5. Target Group

  • School children

  • Students with limited or no access to computers

6. Activities Conducted

Under this project, the following activities are carried out:

  • Introduction to computers (hardware & software basics)

  • Basic typing practice

  • Microsoft Word / basic document preparation

  • Introduction to internet and email

  • Online learning support

  • Guidance on safe and responsible use of technology

Classes are conducted regularly by volunteers and instructors.

7. Outcomes & Impact

Through this project:

  • Students gained basic computer knowledge

  • Many students who had never used a computer before are now confident in basic operations

  • Students are better prepared for school work and future vocational training

  • Interest and motivation toward education and technology have increased

8. Challenges

  • Limited number of computers

  • Need for more learning materials and equipment

  • Transportation and electricity/internet limitations in some areas

Despite these challenges, the program continues with community support.

9. Future Plans

  • Expand the program to more rural areas

  • Increase the number of students

  • Introduce advanced topics such as graphic design, basic coding, and online job skills

  • Provide certificates and structured learning paths

10. Conclusion

The Free IT Class project in Kalutara and Angunukolapalassa has made a positive impact on students who lack access to digital education. By providing free IT knowledge, this program helps empower children and youth, giving them skills that are essential for their future education and careers. Continued support will allow this project to grow and reach more students in need.
