Promise for Holistic Education

Working with unprivileged children is a challenging job and it gets more grueling when you embrace more and more children into your service and deliver quality education. You have to take care not just of the intricate curriculum that focuses on their learning ability and living standards but also their physical and emotional development. Living in slums does not ensure the best environs for learning. Last three months, we kept on our promise to these deprived children to make JAAGO a place where they get the best education, enjoy exposure to the world and an opportunity to grow up strong, healthy and happy.

Annual Teachers’ Meeting

Each year JAAGO Foundation holds its Annual Teachers’ Meeting to involve the teachers in reviewing the overall performance of teachers, management and education; brainstorming solution to persistent problems and making an yearly strategy for JAAGO schools. The meeting this year began with an overall annual review of the management of JAAGO Schools. Other issues that followed the discussion included the dropout rate of JAAGO kids as well as improvements brought into the academic curriculum and students’ response to it. The major decisions in the meeting were to introduce the J.S.C exam under National Curriculum Examination, increase the number of Teachers’ workshops this academic session and make the teacher recruitment system more rigid for quality maintenance. The meeting ended with an award giving ceremony that acknowledged the teachers who performed outstandingly during last academic session.

A Healthy Smile, A Healthy Child

A Free Dental Check up was held for the students of the JAAGO School, Rayerbazar Branch. Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun from FACEview Dental & Orthodontics with Dr. Sharmin Shaila Shabnom from Annur Dental conducted this Dental check up on the 13th of February at the school premises. It is no surprise that our students are not able to afford Dental care given the disadvantaged background they come from. The Doctors started the check up at 10 in the morning. The session went on well into the afternoon. All 473 of the JAAGO Rayerbazar Branch students got their teeth checked up during this event. The doctors found out that 70% of the students have good teeth. However the remaining 30% suffered from conditions such as teething, cavities or tooth decay and knocked out teeth.

"Spectrum Dance Theater" performs live at JAAGO Foundation

The renowned American dance company, “Spectrum Dance Theater” set JAAGO Foundation, Rayerbazar premises ablaze with their electrifying performances! This grand gala took place on the 10th of March as part of the DanceMotionsm USA tour, courtesy of the US Embassy. The dances performed at JAAGO Foundation were choreographed by none other than the brilliant Donald Byrd. These beautiful specialized contemporary numbers performed by the four dancers, Anne Kate Monthy, Stacie Williams, Derek Crescenti and Vincent Michael Lopez awed the young audience. The duet, solos and the hybrid performance of the “Spectrum Dance Theater” opened up a whole new world of the rich dance culture of the United States to the JAAGO Foundation students. Their exhilarating performances were followed by a dance exchange in the students and teachers were requested to share with Spectrum their local dances.

JAZZ concert at JAAGO Foundation

The very famous Art Blakely had once said that Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life. The students of the JAAGO Foundation fall victim to the harsh reality of their lives every day once they step outside the school premises. We at JAAGO Foundation try our best to let our students forget everything that is wrong with their lives and give them a chance to make new exciting memories that they can cherish. After seeing the joy on the faces of these children, there is no denying that this “Ari Roland Quartet” Jazz Concert would be something they will remember for years to come. Jazz is a beautiful gift given by America to all cultures and races. This January Ari Roland Jazz quartet visited JAAGO Foundation, Rayer bazar premises to present a beautiful New York Jazz scene to the students of JAAGO Foundations School. The concert featured Ari Roland (double bass), Zaid Nasser (alto saxophone), Chris Byars (tenor saxophone) & Keith Balla (drums). Their performance was met by ecstatic cheers from their young audience.

America Bangladesh Youth Leadership Exchange Program (ABYLEP)

SPEED Youth, in collaboration with a US-based organization, World Savvy, Scholastica school and JAAGO Foundation helped to host the participants of America Bangladesh Youth Leadership Exchange Program (ABYLEP). With their Bangladeshi counterparts, they learned about climate change and traveled to different affected areas in Bangladesh. The program took place during December’12-January’13.

JAAGO Annual Winter Clothes Drive

The extreme weather conditions in Bangladesh this year have left millions suffering for months. The students at JAAGO Foundation who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are also part of the million Bangladeshis who cannot afford the luxury of proper winter essentials. In times of distress like this Grameenphone Ltd. came forward to help by gifting every JAAGO kid with their own individual blankets! With a total donation of 1200 blankets, Grameenphone Ltd. had made sure that winter would not be a time of anguish for the JAAGO kids but a time when they can enjoy the season’s best offerings.

JAAGO is a family. And we are struggling hard to keep our bond stronger. We recently have strengthened our ‘Sponsor a Child’ program to support all the new students we are going to accommodate in the coming session. We will open up two new branches this July and we need sponsors to support their education. A few minutes’ look into our website and a little bit contribution might make a huge difference in their lives. JAAGO is deeply thankful all those generous sponsors who have been supporting us morally and through donation. We really thank you all for every benevolent contribution that helped us reach education to the many underprivileged kids in Bangladesh.
