Malaria is one of the most infamous diseases in world history & it's consistently one of the deadliest, despite being eradicated in many parts of the world. Hundreds of thousands of people die from malaria every year. Nations that have successfully beat malaria did so through a combination of advanced medication and treatments, prevention of mosquito bites & elimination of infected mosquitoes. Their achievements ought to serve as an inspiring example for the larger global fight to end malaria.
Malaria is the most common fever in Uganda and is one of the biggest child killers. People with malaria get very sick with high fevers, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache, chills and flu-like illness. Especially in children, the disease can worsen rapidly, causing coma and death. Children under 5 years old are most susceptible to malaria because they have very little acquired immunity to resist it. Children can become anemic from malaria and hookworm.
Malaria is transmitted through the bites of some mosquitoes. Sleeping under an insecticide-treated mosquito net is the best way to prevent mosquito bites. Therefore, let's help protect children and families from Malaria by sleeping under insecticide treated mosquito nets (ITNs) every night. Malaria is very dangerous for pregnant women. Wherever malaria is common, pregnant women should be emphasized to prevent malaria by taking antimalarial tablets recommended by a trained health worker.
This World Malaria Day, you can help a generation of children grow up free from the threat of malaria. By helping us provide antimalarial drugs and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to at-risk children and their families, you help make it possible for them to live up to their God-given potential.
