Fresh Start Recovery Report - June 2026

Father & Son - Generational Recovery
Father & Son - Generational Recovery

Client Story – Generational Recovery

Ron grew up in a small town in the Northwest Territories, where alcohol was part of everyday life. It was present in his family, throughout the community, and eventually in his own life. He had his first drink when he was only nine years old. At the time, it did not feel unusual. It felt normal.

As he got older and began working as a mechanic, drinking continued to be accepted as part of the culture around him. What started as something familiar slowly became something that took over.

For many years, Ron's life was marked by the painful cycle of addiction. Relationships were damaged. Friends and family members were lost. Legal issues, health concerns, and repeated attempts at treatment became part of his story. He tried to stop more than once, but alcohol kept pulling him back.

What finally changed things was his youngest son.

Ron wanted to be present for him. He wanted to be the father his son needed. Determined to create a different future, Ron committed himself to treatment at Fresh Start. For the first time, he fully embraced the process, completed the program, and began building a foundation for recovery.

As he prepared to leave treatment, one question remained: how could he continue moving forward while rebuilding his relationship with his son?

Ron approached people he knew and trusted at Fresh Start and asked whether there was any way he could move into one of Fresh Start's two-bedroom recovery-oriented housing units so he and his son could live together.

Fresh Start was able to offer him an apartment. Ron made a promise to the family members who had been caring for his 11-year-old son. He told them he would continue working on his recovery and become the dad his son deserved.

Six years later, Ron has kept that promise.

Today, he is employed as a heavy-duty mechanic, remains committed to his recovery, and has rebuilt a relationship with his son that once seemed out of reach. He continues to attend recovery meetings, stays connected to the Fresh Start community, and remains engaged with the supports that have helped him build a stable life.

What has made the difference is not only having a place to live, but having support close by. The Outreach Support office is located within the same building, giving residents regular access to recovery support, guidance, accountability, and connection. Staff are present throughout the week, and Fresh Start's treatment centre is only minutes away, ensuring that help is never far when it is needed.

Visitors are often surprised when they arrive at the building. There are no obvious signs that it is recovery-oriented housing. Children play in the courtyard. Neighbours talk with one another. People head to work and return home at the end of the day. It looks like any other apartment community because that is exactly the point. Recovery has become part of everyday life.

For Ron, one of the greatest gifts has been knowing that his son has grown up in a safe and stable environment. He no longer worries about his son being surrounded by the same influences that shaped his own childhood. Instead, he has watched him develop healthy friendships, make positive decisions, and build a future of his own.

Ron often reflects on how different his son's experience has been from his own. Alcohol was normalized throughout much of Ron's childhood. His son, however, has been able to grow up surrounded by recovery, accountability, and positive role models. Watching his son make thoughtful decisions about the direction of his life is one of the things Ron is most grateful for today.

Recovery is often thought of as changing one person's life. Ron sees it differently.

The choices he made six years ago changed the course of two lives.

What began with a commitment to treatment became an opportunity to rebuild a family. Recovery-oriented housing provided stability. Outreach support provided ongoing connection and accountability. Together, they helped create the conditions for recovery to take root and last.

For Ron, recovery did not simply mean stopping drinking. It meant becoming the father he always wanted to be and creating a different future for the next generation.

That is what generational recovery looks like.
