Summary

When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, thousands lost roofs, belongings, and stability. But for many women, the disaster didn't start with the floods-it started with the abuse they silently endured. Homes were destroyed. Jobs disappeared. Families were displaced. Survivors who were already unsafe were pushed into greater danger. I-SEEED Youths is creating safe spaces, emergency housing, therapy, and climate-smart jobs so survivors can rebuild their lives with dignity.

Challenge

For survivors of abuse, Melissa was not the first storm, just the one that made everything worse. Homes damaged, food scarce. The storm destroyed their stability, worsening violence, stress, and fear. With shelters overwhelmed, families have nowhere else to turn, and livelihoods lost, survivors face deeper trauma, hunger, and insecurity. Without urgent support, they remain trapped in unsafe conditions with no path to rebuild or escape.

Solution

This project gives survivors what the storm took: a safe place to breathe, recover, and rebuild. We will be building safe homes, providing counseling, food, and healing programs to address trauma. Then we empower families with climate-smart farming skills and paid work in our greenhouses, giving them financial freedom and a future away from abuse. By combining protection with income-generation, we help survivors reclaim their lives and break free from violence for good.

Long-Term Impact

The project will create long-term change by helping survivors become economically independent, emotionally healed, and better prepared for future disasters. Our climate-smart agricultural model ensures ongoing employment, local food security, and stronger community resilience. As survivors regain stability, they become role models for other at-risk families, helping reduce domestic violence, strengthen community safety networks, and shift cultural norms around abuse.
