From 100 children in Mexico, only 13 reach University. Peraj Mexico works through one-on-one mentoring sessions between University students and children from public elementary schools. For 10 months both mentors and mentees are involved in activities that help develop their social skills. So far, we have worked with 27,000 kids and 27,000 mentors all over the country. We want to go further and take the program to 3 indigenous towns in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas.
The risk of school dropout in Mexico is very high. Children from vulnerable towns hardly see University as an option for a better life. Many of them have only one parent, do not receive enough attention from an adult, or live in very violent conditions, reasons why they drop out of school.
Through mentoring, we help children visualize a better future. We work with mentors who are University students in their last months of school and mentees who are children from elementary public school. They work together for 10 months through different activities in areas like academic, social and cultural to develop their soft skills.
In 15 years, we have worked with more that 27,000 pairs all over the country in more that 90 Universities and 400 elementary schools. In these years we have seen children achieve a better future by continuing studying; children from the first generation are becoming mentors of the new children reaching our program. Society benefits from the program by having committed University students and more prepared children wanting a better future.
