The project aims to plant fruit trees in rural schools, benefiting children in multiple ways. Providing nutritious food addresses food insecurity and improves their overall health. The fruit trees also create a better learning environment, as children can concentrate better when they are well-nourished. Another crucial aspect is preventing children from leaving school to forage in the forest, which exposes them to wildlife attacks and other dangers.
Many school children living in underserved rural communities in Nigeria fall victim to wildlife attacks due lack of fruits within the school premises and hunger. As a little rural kid, the founder of RUWAI, Uche Isieke, witnessed how many of his hungry school colleagues leave school to search for fruits and nuts to eat to enable them to acquire energy and focus on learning. This unreported problem has continued to put vulnerable children at risk of wildlife attacks and poor academic records.
RUWAI is establishing fast-growing fruit tree orchards in rural schools to provide children access to nutritious foods, and prevent them from leaving school, which exposes them to dangers and create a conducive learning environment. Additionally, the project trains the children to become future agents of change by instilling environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility.
The project will positively impact children's nutritional well-being, leadership, and safety in rural areas. There will be an increase in the number of trees in rural schools and environmental awareness among children.
