By Uche Isieke | Raising Future Climate Action Champions
Did you know that planting fruit trees in schools is a game-changer that can help address multiple social crises facing underprivileged children in rural Nigeria? The Rural Watch Africa Initiative (RUWAI) is championing an effort that provides an innovative solution that benefits the environment and helps combat hunger, which leads some children to forage in forests and the associated insecurity.
In rural schools with limited resources, children often leave school during the day to search for fruits and nuts to eat, leading to poor academic performance. Some of the children even fall victim to assaults in the wild. RUWAI is addressing this issue by establishing an orchard of early-maturing fruit trees and food gardens in designated rural areas. This provides a sustainable approach to making food available in schools and protecting vulnerable children.
Apart from the benefits of planting fruit trees to feed underprivileged children, the program teaches volunteerism, community service, leadership, climate action, and environmental education by engaging these children in tree planting. It creates a social and ecological justice advocacy culture, empowering students to become community change agents.
RUWAI's Fruit Trees for Schools program is an ongoing effort that requires sustained investment from individuals and organizations. The organization hopes to incorporate water facilities in the affected schools, ensuring that students have access to clean water and a safe and conducive environment for learning.
By investing in the Fruit Trees for Schools program, businesses and institutions can significantly impact the lives of underprivileged children in rural. This initiative provides not only fruit trees for children's nourishment but also empowers them to become leaders in their communities. It is a powerful way to champion local actors and confront the social crises these children face.
Every investment made will ensure that every child is safe in school and learning in the long term. Together, we can create a better future for these children and make an impact that will last for generations. To learn more visit https://lnkd.in/dBXdgkhC
