Summary

The majority of rural schools in the countries where we work often only have one teacher for two or three grades at the same time. They set work for one grade and move to the next with no time to answer questions. Despite the teachers' best efforts the children are unable to receive a full education, especially when their parents can't help with homework due to being unable to read and write themselves. By providing one local teacher per grade the children can receive more one-to-one attention.

Challenge

With many rural primary schools in the countries where we work only having one or two teachers covering multiple grades, the children are not receiving the attention they need in their formative years with many dropping out early. This lack of preparation for secondary school and further education for those children who do continue studying is causing further desertion from the classroom. With many jobs requiring at least a secondary education these students cannot enter the formal workplace.

Solution

Thanks to donations we can employ more local teachers to fill the gaps in rural schools and have one teacher per grade, making an immediate fundamental positive change to the children's education. Many of our local teachers were once our previous students who we have helped through further education before taking them on as teachers, showing the current students what is possible if they continue with their studies.

Long-Term Impact

More local teachers in primary school classrooms mean that more children are academically prepared for secondary school and college and therefore having a better chance to secure formal employment and income for their families. The rural communities can grow economically with better healthcare and further education for generations to come. By implementing sustainable income plans in these communities the costs are covered over the long-term thus empowering them with their own future.
