Local teachers showing the way forward

By Dom Williams | Founder and Director

As June draws to a close and we commence the second half of the year, what better time for the children to show their gratitude for our local teachers on Day of the Teacher in Guatemala. For the children it is seeing the circle being completed as their teachers were once the same as them, from the same poor homes and conditions. Many of our local teachers were once part of our school many years ago. It was indeed an emotional day!

Whilst education is important, the key is the availability of jobs at the end of it. Not a problem with the Phoenix college in Honduras where the students graduate in Sustainable Rural Development. Since the first graduation in 2014, 32 of the 35 graduates from the Phoenix College now have full-time jobs with various NGO’s – the other three graduates we employ as teachers in the primary school.

As the second half of the year is upon us in Perú the children now have their own personal textbooks to work from in mathematics and language. They also have all the basic materials they need to forge ahead with their educational progression. We also welcomed a new Phoenix teacher to the team who was once a students at the school all those years ago!

In Ecuador the school year comes to a close with the teacher/class ration down to 1:2 (one teacher per two grades) which would have been fewer if not for our Phoenix teacher. We want to increase the teacher numbers to one per class over the next year or so.

Obviously, our long-term aim is to provide sustainability for the school and its costs, hence our big drive in investing in sustainable income plans, which not only benefit local families and help to cover costs of further education, though also help to cover the school’s costs, including teachers’ salaries, materials, food and fruit etc.

So to make this goal a real possibility, here is some excellent charitable news from Global Giving who have $110,000 to match donations by 50% from 9am EDT on Wednesday 12th July whilst funds last! If you want to support the Seven Continents Charity Challenge 2017 for sustainable income plans, please do donate to this page from the time and date stated previously and we should get 50% bonus – brilliant!

Have a fantastic summer, cheers!
