Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness among older people in Nigeria. Many elderly persons in rural and low-income communities cannot afford surgery, which costs around $100 per eye. This project will fund cataract surgeries for 500 elderly individuals to restore sight, reduce dependence, and help them regain independence and dignity in daily life.
Thousands of elderly Nigerians live with vision loss caused by untreated cataracts. Most cannot afford the cost of surgery, which leads to total blindness over time. In rural areas, lack of access and funding worsens the situation. Without intervention, many lose their ability to care for themselves, work, or contribute to their families and communities.
This project will fund cataract surgery for 500 elderly Nigerians. It will be carried out in rural clinics with trained eye surgeons. Each patient will receive pre-surgery tests, the operation, and basic post-surgery care. Transport and local coordination will ensure that older persons in need are reached. Surgeries will be done in batches for smooth delivery.
Restoring sight through cataract surgery allows elderly individuals to regain mobility, care for themselves, and participate in daily life again. They become less dependent on caregivers and can engage with family and community. In the long term, the project will improve quality of life for 500 people and ease the burden on health and caregiving systems.
