Quarterly Report – Q1 2026(January – March 2026)
OverviewThe first quarter of 2026 was marked by continued dedication to the care and well-being of Delhi and Gandhi, with particular attention given to Gandhi’s health and recovery. Alongside these efforts, the sanctuary maintained strong relationships with long-term partners and encouraged meaningful community engagement through seasonal initiatives.
Animal Health & Well-beingIn January, Gandhi experienced a fall after her hind leg gave way while she was resting. This incident is believed to be linked to her habit of sleeping while standing, which may stem from physical discomfort, difficulty getting back up, or psychological factors. As a result, Gandhi is often not fully rested, which may contribute to fatigue and instability.
Following the fall, she showed signs of stiffness and discomfort, particularly in her legs. Immediate care was provided, including infrared therapy, green clay applications, and close monitoring. Although the day following the incident brought some increased stiffness, as expected, Gandhi gradually began to improve. Her mobility became more flexible, and despite some lingering stiffness, her overall condition stabilized. Encouragingly, she maintained her playful personality throughout, continuing to interact with Delhi and her environment.
Over the following weeks, Gandhi demonstrated notable resilience. However, it became clear that she now tires more easily and requires additional rest and care. Observations also confirmed that her behavior appears to change during full moon periods, when she seems more confident, present, and playful.
Social DynamicsDelhi and Gandhi continue to live in a semi-separated arrangement, divided by a fence but maintaining close social contact. This setup has proven beneficial, particularly for Gandhi, as it allows her to rest and move at her own pace while still feeling reassured by Delhi’s presence.
Their bond remains strong and is expressed through a range of interactions, including vocal communication, physical contact through the fence, and playful exchanges. They frequently engage in teasing behaviors, such as stealing each other’s food, which reflects their ongoing companionship and familiarity.
Delhi remains active and energetic, often spending long periods foraging, especially for brambles. She also displays curiosity toward her surroundings and has even formed a playful connection with a local fox that visits at night. Gandhi, meanwhile, continues to show determination and strong character, often insisting on attention through persistent vocalizations until Delhi or caregivers respond.
Attempts to reunite them fully have resulted in restlessness and increased anxiety for Gandhi, which negatively impacts her health. As a result, the current arrangement is considered the most appropriate for their well-being.
Environmental & Seasonal NotesSeasonal changes during the quarter brought a brief period of snow in January. During this time, Delhi continued her usual outdoor activities, confidently moving between the cold outdoors and the comfort of the heated barn. Gandhi, in contrast, preferred to remain indoors, only occasionally venturing outside.
In March, the sanctuary encouraged community members to contribute to the elephants’ diet by donating branches from suitable trees. Delhi and Gandhi particularly enjoy a variety of tree species, and this initiative not only supports their nutritional needs but also strengthens community involvement in their care.
Partnerships & SupportElephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary (EHEES) is very grateful for all support, big and small, and for the long-standing support of organisations as World Animal Protection, Olsen Animal Trust, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation,...
The Brigit Bardot Foundation has played a crucial role since 2012. The foundation was instrumental in the creation of the sanctuary, including the construction of the first barn and outdoor enclosures that welcomed Delhi and Gandhi.
This quarter also marked a moment of reflection and gratitude following the passing of Brigitte Bardot. Her lifelong commitment to animal welfare has left a lasting legacy, and the sanctuary expressed deep appreciation for her unwavering support and compassion.
Community Engagement & OutlookThroughout the quarter, the sanctuary received continued support and encouragement from the community, particularly through kind messages and participation in donation efforts. This engagement remains essential to the ongoing care of Delhi and Gandhi.
Looking ahead, the focus will remain on closely monitoring Gandhi’s health and adapting care to her evolving needs, while ensuring that both elephants continue to thrive within a stable and supportive environment. The sanctuary will also continue to foster community involvement and build on its strong foundation of partnerships.
Of course, the sanctuary will continue to actively seek funding for its expansion in order to provide a retirement home for more elephants.
