Elephant Haven: News from 2nd Quarter 2025

Gandhi and Delhi
Gandhi and Delhi

Early May 2025

Until recently, the two elephant ladies of EHEES, Gandhi and Delhi, were inseparable. Whenever apart, they greeted each other with trumpeting and squeaks, and always rushed to one another’s side. Their friendship seemed unbreakable.

In early May, however, things changed. One morning, Gandhi appeared distant. Delhi approached her cautiously, but Gandhi showed no reaction. Later, surveillance footage revealed Gandhi charging Delhi, who fell but quickly got up. After some pushing and trunk-wrestling, they rested together, but the next day Gandhi was restless, avoided Delhi, and refused to enter the barn.

We decided to separate them, though they could still see and touch each other. Both had only minor scrapes but seemed mostly emotionally hurt. From constant communication, they had shifted to silence—Delhi grazing alone, Gandhi lingering near the barn. Their friendship appeared on pause, and we hoped they would find their way back.

Mid-May 2025

Initially, when apart, they ignored each other. Soon, small nighttime interactions resumed. A cautious reunion followed, but Gandhi still moved away when Delhi reached out. Both seemed to sense it was not yet time.

Over the next days, Gandhi stayed nervous, skipped meals, and looked tired. We separated them again fully, which helped Gandhi regain calm. Delhi accepted this as well.

Both elephants carry emotional baggage from their pasts, and Gandhi may simply have needed distance. Gradually, new interactions reappeared at their own pace, which we continue to monitor closely.

June 2025

To better understand, we sought advice from specialists, who reminded us there may never be clear answers—what matters is patience, sensitivity, and giving Gandhi and Delhi space.

Gandhi’s chronic foot problem may contribute to her stress. She still suffers from an issue in her right hind sole, possibly linked to past trauma. An X-ray was scheduled for more clarity. Danielle Dibbens suggested new thermal imaging, and we were also connected with an acupuncture specialist.

A reunion attempt seemed promising at first but ended with renewed aggression. For now, we give them space, always leaving the option for contact indoors and outdoors. We are deeply grateful for the advice and support received.

Mid-July 2025

X-rays revealed osteoarthritis in Gandhi’s foot, though no foreign object was found. Another session is planned for a clearer view. Gandhi was cooperative and gentle throughout the procedure.

Despite summer heat and insects, both elephants enjoy showers, clay baths, water sprays, and throwing sand on themselves. Delhi often sleeps outdoors at night. Interactions between the two vary daily, and we try to read their signals carefully to judge the right moment to reunite them.

Meanwhile, 107 bales of top-quality hay from our rented field have been delivered and stored in the hay tunnel.

We will keep you updated on the next steps.

Expansion of EHEES

Since 2022, we have been working closely with the French Ministry for Ecological Transition (MTE).

As part of their Call for Expressions of Interest 1 (AMI 1) – “Refuges for Captive Animals”, and in compliance with Law no. 2021-1539, the MTE awarded us an investment grant that enabled us to begin part of the essential extension works.

With the support of our partners, we have already started work on new outdoor enclosures, along with the preparations and administrative formalities required for the construction of a second barn.

Given France’s current budgetary situation, it is uncertain whether a new Call for Expressions of Interest (AMI) will be issued in 2025. This represents a challenge, but not one that will stop us. We are actively seeking alternative solutions and funding opportunities.

Together—with the continued support of the government, our partners, and new donors—we remain confident in our goal of building a second barn, which will allow us to welcome more elephants: future companions for Gandhi and Delhi, the first residents of EHEES.

See you next time, and...

A big thank you from Gandhi and Delhi!
