Summary

Do you think it's fair that where you live dictates your level of education? In Peru, young people from rural areas are far less likely to complete higher education than their urban peers, due to lack of financial resources, preparation, and support. Our Transitions Project enables indigenous young people from the Andes to become the first in their families to study after secondary school, leading to better employment opportunities and empowering them to break the poverty cycle.

Challenge

75% of Peru's working population is employed in the informal sector. This means workers are not protected by law, can't access benefits like healthcare and pensions, and are paid less. Further education ensures young people gain skills and knowledge that help them to secure better pay and working conditions. However, in Cusco, young people from rural areas four times less likely to access further education than their urban peers, due to lack of financial resources, preparation and support.

Solution

Our Transitions Project reduces this inequality in access to further education through three phases: i) Helping young people prepare for entrance exams and face the challenges of studying away from home. ii) Providing financial scholarships and emotional support to help students complete their studies. iii) Teaching tools to help young people be competitive in the workplace. Young people become the first in their families to study beyond secondary school and access better job opportunities.

Long-Term Impact

Through further and higher education, young people have access to better paying, formal jobs, which empower them to break the poverty cycle in their communities. When we started our Transitions Project, only 7 people from the district of Ccorca had accessed further education. Now, more than 100 young people from rural villages have become the first in their families to study after school. Of the 36 project graduates so far, 20 have found fair employment, and 70% of them have formal contracts.
