Abhayanavita, project manager of the women’s livelihood and empowerment project in the slums of Pune, shares:
“Avni is one of our beneficiaries and participants in the women’s leadership training. She learned sewing in the project. Now in the midst of the Coronavirus crisis, she has managed to negotiate a contract from a local manufacturer. The contract is for producing face masks and medical aprons. She leads a women’s cooperative of around 70 women out of which some 50 women are our trainees. Avni receives raw material from the manufacturer which she distributes to these women. After finishing the manufacturer collects all the stitched materials in exchange for more raw material.
This way, each woman is earning around 450-500 Rs per day. While doing this they are also taking care of their own safety and keeping distances and following other safety measures.
This is a great achievement for Avni and the women’s group. Not only are her leadership qualities shining but it also enables the women to continue earning. So many other income opportunities are closed in this time of crisis; but their business is thriving while they can even contribute to safety and the prevention of the pandemic.”
Thank you for continuing to support this work during this time crucial time. Your support enables innovation and the constant adaptation that current global events require.
With gratitude,
