Priya, a student in the eighth grade, lives with her family in the Chaware Nagar slum, an area often troubled by crime. Her father earns a living as a construction worker, and her mother works as a housemaid.
Despite the economic and social challenges they face, Priya has been able to pursue her education.
Thanks to the school’s partnership with Karuna, Priya had the opportunity to participate in a personal safety education program.
This training was a turning point for her, as she shares:
“For the first time, I understand about my body. I can now overcome my hesitation and fear of menstruation. I know that I don’t need to stay at home during periods.”
These words from Priya reflect the impact of the education she received. It has empowered her to address and overcome the discrimination and harassment she faced, including eve-teasing and bullying.
Now, with a clear understanding of her rights, she is determined to seek help whenever needed and encourage others to do the same.
Priya’s story is a powerful reminder of how education can provide knowledge and confidence to those who need it most and ensure there are no barriers to all girls receiving an education.
Thanks to you, there are less barriers to girls' education.
