Mayuri is thriving!

By Amoghamati Traud-Dubois | Programme Manager

Mayuri has been a student in the sowing class 2019-20. She is 22 years old.

Normally, in most Indian families it's the father or brother who is the bread winner of the family. He is usually the main person to work and to take the responsibility for the family's sustenance. But it's very different with Mayuri's family. Her father is suffering from heart insufficiency and can't work anymore. Mayuri's brother wasn’t bothered to engage for the family but he rather enjoys his life. So Mayuri's mother had to step up to earn. Unfortunately, she isn't educated and therefore couldn't get a decent job. All she can do is help cooking in big wedding functions. This is how the family survived even though it's not a stable income.

So, all the burden for survival of the family was on her mother. After she left school Mayuri took initiative and applied with the BH Amravati project for learning a livelihood. She decided on learning tailoring and quickly mastered the required skills. After her "graduation" Mayuri started with a very small order of just one blouse. But that was just the beginning!

When the pandemic hit and the lockdown started her mother couldn't get any more cooking jobs as all big wedding parties were prohibited. Fortunately, Mayuri's little enterprise was not affected and she took on more and more orders. That has been such a relief for her mother who even after the lockdown was lifted, didn't need to work as hard as before. Thus, Mayuri is a big support to her mother and her family.

She is very well skilled now and receives many orders. Consequently, she is very busy to complete them on time and to satisfy her customers. Mayuri is now economically empowered and breaks a big stereotype. Namely, that girls can't take responsibility of their family.
