Mala’s story is one of courage and determination. She was born into a struggling family, where her father was visually impaired, and her mother had left them. This left Mala taking care of her two younger brothers and her grandmother. Mala had little hope of pursuing an education and couldn’t see how her life could change.
But Mala was determined… She wanted to study computer engineering and become a professional, so she applied to a college in Amravati and got accepted! But how could she afford the fees, the travel, or the rent? She had no one to support her.
That’s when she found out about Karuna and the Solera Girls’ Home. The Solera Girls’ Home is one of our projects, offering a safe and supportive place for girls from marginalised communities who want to pursue higher education.
Mala was welcomed into the home, where she received accommodation, food, and guidance. She also found friendship and solidarity with the other girls and the staff. She was able to focus on her studies, without worrying about her family’s situation. She read every book she could find in the small library of the girls’ home. She worked hard and learned a lot.
Mala completed her computer engineering degree with good grades. She is now ready to find a job and help her family. She says, “If I hadn’t been admitted to the Solera Girls’ Home, I probably wouldn’t have been able to study and I wouldn’t have passed the computer technology exam.”
Mala showcases how this project can support girls to break the cycle of poverty and discrimination and become agents of change in their communities.
Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of hundreds of girls who deserve a better future.
