There is something so special about seeing a child’s face the exact second the world snaps into focus. For a long time, we’ve been working hard to bring that "magic" to more kids in South Africa, and this quarter, we’ve taken a massive leap forward that has us all buzzing!
The big news? We finally have our very own testing kits!
In the past, we relied on external setups, but now that we’re mobile and independent, we’ve been hitting the road and visiting schools directly. It has changed everything. Not only does it feel like a fun road trip every time we head out, but it’s also making the project so much more financially sustainable. Because we can do the initial screenings ourselves, the cost per child has dropped significantly. It means every bit of support you give now stretches further than it ever has before. It’s a wonderful feeling to know we’re building something that can stand on its own two feet.
But we didn't stop at the testing. We’ve also been busy playing "matchmaker" between local communities and the healthcare system. We are so happy to share that we’ve officially signed up several local opticians who are now committed to providing government-funded glasses and eye tests for children living in poverty.
This is huge because it creates a permanent safety net. We find the kids who are struggling to see the chalkboard, we do the initial tests with our new kits, and then we have a direct line to professional care that doesn't cost the families a cent.
The energy in the schools has been incredible. Imagine a classroom where a child who was thought to be "distracted" or "slow" puts on a pair of glasses and realizes for the first time that the squiggles on the board are actually letters. The boost in their confidence is almost instant. They go from hiding in the back of the room to sitting right up front, eager to participate.
Thank you for helping us buy the kits, fuel the van, and build these bridges with local doctors. You aren't just giving the "Gift of Vision"—you’re giving these kids a fair shot at life, and you’re helping us build a smarter, more sustainable way to do it.
We can’t wait to see what the next school visit brings!
With so much gratitude and a very clear outlook,
