Dear Friends,
It’s finally spring again, something all of us here in my household have been looking forward to. We certainly hope that you all were able to stay well through the devastation that occurred over the winter due to the pandemic. All of us at Rock-Paper-Scissors are currently watching the situation closely in Vietnam, with the new outbreaks there over the last month in 30 cities.
Our good news is that as of this month, through your gifts to our Bikes for Girls program, 180 girls have received new bikes since January! Here in the photos are Hien and Thuy, two third graders who received new bikes last month. Both the girls and their families were so excited on the day of the bike receiving ceremonies. Thuy who is nine years old, lives with her mom, her grand-mother, step-father and her half-sister in a mango grove far from the main village. Thuy’s mom works for a shoe factory, earning very little, and often just enough to buy bread each morning. Thuy’s step father works as a driver and comes back home very infrequently. Thuy’s favorite subject is English and her dream is to become a teacher one day. Hien is also nine years old, and lives with her father, mother and two brothers. Hien’s father finds work on construction crews, and her mother is a street food seller. Hien loves to study Math and Vietnamese in school, and loves the idea of being a beautician!
In other news in 2020 we received a small grant to start a summer tutoring program for girls to help advance them in their studies prior to each grade level. We are starting this program out slowly and in a very, very poor village of about 150 ethnic minority families. Last year we had 27 girls from 6th-9th grade take summer classes with us, in physics, chemistry, math, English and Vietnamese. All of these girls attend a boarding school for ethnic minorities far from the village, and many drop out of school even before middle school to go to work. We are happy to say that all 27 girls made it through the year of schooling and we have over 35 girls enrolled in the program for summer 2021, and are currently raising funds for this summer’s program.
Our Bikes for Girls program continues to be so successful thanks to all of your support over the years. As of today you all have helped 2,454 girls!
Thank you everyone and have a good spring!
Sara and the Rock-Paper-Scissors Team
