This project is raising funds to run the girls' boarding facility at the school and help pay for their secondary school education. The dormitory accommodates 14 vulnerable girls and helps to safeguard them from abuse and neglect, reduces the risk of assault by taking away the need to walk far distances alone to and from school, provides breakfast, lunch and dinner, gives a safe space to study and provides guidance and support.
A small but significant number of our sponsored pupils are suffering from neglect at home due mostly to poverty. This results in poor academic performance due to trauma, ill-health, lateness, and absenteeism. Examples of neglect are sleeping on the streets, physical and sexual abuse, staying at home at night without parental care, being locked out of home, living in houses which are in disrepair and in danger of collapsing, sleeping on a mud floor in old nylon sacks and going hungry.
In January 2023 we raised enough money to build a dormitory housing 14 girls who were suffering from abuse, hunger, neglect and trauma. They now have a safe place to be able to concentrate on their school studies. However, ongoing financial support is needed for the girls to remain at the dormitory and for the older girls to complete their education at secondary school.
There is noticeable improvements in the following areas: academic performance, confidence, interpersonal relationships and time management. The girls are cared for by a matron who supports their basic needs, provides additional tuition in the evening and emotional support. Furthermore, the girls reported significant improvements in their own social and emotional learning, self esteem and relationship skills.
