“Do you know why are you menstruating every month?” The question was asked by Smiley Days Team to the schoolgirls during the workshop. The team was shocked that only two girls among the group of 45 were answered and the remaining were silent.
It is the twenty-first century and periods, a natural biological process, is still a matter of taboo. Girls and women cannot open up about periods and they feel ashamed to talk about it. Whereas, menstrual hygiene management education & awareness is a basic need to stay healthy and happy.
We are continuously striving to spread the education & knowledge towards healthy periods in rural as well as the urban slums through Smiley Days Initiative. The project helps to sensitize and educate adolescent girls & women towards the practice of safe menstrual hygiene behaviours for their healthy minds and well-being.
Recently, we have organized two workshops with schoolgirls and educated them on menstrual hygiene management practices to keep them happy and healthy. More than 100 girls attended both sessions with enthusiasm and discussed their issues regarding menstruation.
A schoolgirl named Varsha (name changed) asked, “If is it safe If we use cloth during periods?” She looked happy when she got the answer from the Smiley Days team that Yes sure, we can use cloth but it should be properly cleaned, washed & dried in the sunlight. But sanitary pads are more comfortable for school girls.
Thanks to our supporters who are changing lives and creating an educated & empowered world for women and girls.
Regards,
Team IDF
