This project will fight violence against young women/girls in the slums of Kampala through raising awareness, changing behaviour, providing counselling to victims and empowering communities with knowledge and tools needed to resist young women's /girls' abuse. The result will be that young women/girls will be able free from all forms of violence. Their children will be happier, healthier, and better protected, while communities will appreciate the importance of protecting young women/girls.
Around 53% of young women/girls aged 15-24 in the slums of Kampala have faced sexual violence in their lifetime. Also a study by Ministry of Gender revealed that 1 in 3 girls suffer sexual violence during their childhoods. This has negative consequences, including high rates of STI, HIV/AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, mental health disorders, injuries or death. Perpetrators include their teachers, peers, caregivers and community members. Majority of the victims do not seek services
CIDO provides social-psychological and health support to young women girls affected by sexual violence. Also young women / girls are educated about the dangers of sexual violence and how to prevent it. We will identify 50 young women/girls affected by sexual violence, council them and link them to service providers to get health and / or legal services. Caregivers, peers, local leaders and community members will be taught about the dangers of sexual violence and how to prevent it among girls.
The project will support 50 young women/girls who are victims of sexual violence by educating them of their sexual reproductive health and rights. It will reduce HIV, STIs, unwanted pregnancies by providing contraceptives, testing kits for HIV/STI, raising community awareness on the risks, as well as supporting those infected with HIV/AIDS and other STIs to access the proper treatment. The long term impact will be that the girls/young women will gain self-confidence and protect their rights.
