The greenhouses do not only provide the children at the Sandra Jones Centre with fresh organic vegetables, but for many of the girls, it is a springboard to independence and hope.
Maddy came to us in the beginning of 2018. She was an only child and lived with her mother who pampered her, so she was used to getting her own way. When she arrived she had a negative attitude and found it difficult living with so many girls her own age. We were concerned about her behaviour because she was becoming a trouble maker and we didn’t want her to influence the others.
As Maddy was forced into working in a team environment, we began to see her attitude changing. Instead of the negativity, she became more considerate of others. She discovered that she had strong leadership abilities and over time these developed. Not only did we find her to be more likeable, over time she also appreciated the new person emerging. She flourished in all areas and when she graduated and left us in October, she had earned enough money through our greenhouse project to start a small vegetable project for herself. We are so proud of her. The Maddy who originally came to us was gone and in her place was a strong, gracious young woman who knew where she was going and what she wanted to do.
It is stories like these that make us so grateful for the opportunities that the greenhouses give to our girls!
The team here at the American Foundation for Children with AIDS thanks you for supporting this project and the work we do for the children in Africa. If you would like to learn even more about what we do or how you can meet some of the children you have helped, please contact Tanya Weaver at tweaver@AFCAids.org.
