The case of San Carlos Sija Community Library (Guatemala)
A Riecken Community Library today gives more than just access to books and other resources; it gives access to the world from home or while on the road. It also gives access to the true visionaries of information organization and dissemination — librarians, who are more valuable than ever before. While many of the duties and responsibilities of librarians have changed over the years, it is still true that they hold the keys to the best and most relevant information available on the planet.
Riecken Libraries today house more than books, and librarians are more than good stewards of materials. Both have evolved to meet the changing needs of their users, by embracing technological advancements. Libraries are still a place filled with information, imagination, and community and librarians are an essential part of the system because of their knowledge, skill and passion.
Communuty Libraries continue to be harbingers for freedom, communication, creativity and advancement, and librarians will continue to bring the information to life for many children, teens and adults alike.
As in the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit Guatemala hard. As the pandemic wore on and some areas planned for at least partial re-opening, Riecken created comprehensive safety protocols for re-opening of the libraries once their municipalities would approve such action. With many of the libraries still closed or offering limited services. However, here are some of the alternatives being offered in some of the Riecken libraries. Many libraries have implemented curbside pick-up and home delivery options for loaned books and materials.
Libraries are taking a firm step in the digitization of their services, especially regarding access to information resources and reading books.
Thanks to this initiative and the new tecnologial equipment, there is a total of 306 digital users, among 306 users of the new computers and internet and 60 digital readers in San Carlos Sija Library. All these users will be able to enjoy free access to thousands of titles in a wide variety of formats (books, audiobooks, podcasts, magazines, videos, movies and much more) and participate in different activities such as reading clubs or debates.
The content in “Descúbrelo” is available in Spanish and some books in English, and the titles are structured by stages and educational levels to facilitate users’ access to the most appropriate and interesting works for their age. In addition, thanks to the platform’s technology, users will be able to obtain monitoring reports on their improvement in reading, as well as interact with other people. The Descúbrelo platform is part of a comprehensive learning plan, Mentes Brillantes, of the Riecken Foundation that includes content which each educational center can customize according to their needs. Descúbrelo works multi-device and multi-platform, with or without Internet connection, and allows a multitude of activities that promote collaborative learning, creation and publication of content, and participation in reading clubs or debates with authors.
The library has been the headquarters of the Community Developmet Conseil (COCODE) where teachers develop children classes on Wednesdays. The library facilities have been used for young people to carry out tasks and exhibitions online.
In this Quarter, San Carlos SIja Community Library has worked with 17 children (2 - 5 years old), promoting reading early childhood development at home. Caregivers, mothers and fathers demonstrate the implemented activities through photographs and videos that they send to a WhatsApp group created by the librarians.
Despite the circumstances of not being able to improve the story time at the library, the initiative arose to do it once a week using social networks. We had more than 100 reproductions in each video and taking advantage of the resources that we have in the library such as books, puppets, television, internet and crafts with accessible materials for children who watch us from home.
San Carlos Sija Community Library in Guatema, as well as the rest of the community libraries that are part of the Riecken network, with support from USAID/ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad), have improved their technological equipment, their collection of books and furniture. And in the end of 2021, the Library will be already to improve the renovation works.
Riecken community libraries, with with support from USAID/ASHA, will continue to help transform a single building block -- a community library with free computers, internet, print resources and programs -- into a springboard for democracy building, local leadership development, women’s empowerment, civic engagement and social justice in Guatemala. Riecken community Libraries are a demonstration and promotion American principles of inclusiveness and equality, civic engagement, free expression and independent inquiry. Together with the USAID / ASHA program, we will give a concrete response to promote community cohesion, so damaged by the current situation. We are proud to see the flexibility of the Riecken Community Library sustainability model in action, allowing for relevant local response to this worldwide calamity.
Riecken Community Libraries are a social platform and an essential space for the social cohesion present in 11 communities in Guatemala.
