Sustainability for women's entrepreneurial efforts

By Francisco Jose Alcaide | Regional Director

Mujeres, Manos a la obra (Women, Let’s do it!) is a sustainability initiative for the libraries’ entrepreneurial initiatives (women’s group). Two components have been planned: 1) savings and credit, which motivates to create the habit of saving and 2) loans, with which women will obtain timely financing to undertake productive and economic activities.

That initiative was socialized with board’s members of community libraries to know the proposal and affirm participation in the process.

A savings and credit manual has been developed from the perspective of women to implement in mid-May in all communities.

It has already been socialized in the 5 communities, including community leaders, women's organizations, municipalities, non-governmental organizations and government to publicize the benefits of the initiative. At the moment, more than 50 women entrepreneurs have shown interest in being part of the process. It is expected to start in the middle of May 2019.

This women’s empowerment program is being supported by all “Glogbalgivinners” and BFB Foundation.

The Riecken Guatemala Foundation empowers girls and women through its network of community libraries.

In Guatemala, 46 women have implemented a pilot of Mujeres, manos a la obra. A small step to learn how savings could support the sustainability of their entrepreneurial efforts.
