Summary

We need help tackling Zimbabwe's birth registration crisis. Without documentation children can't access education, policing, welfare, inheritance and more. Vulnerable for life, they grow up unable to vote and often forced into informal/illegal employment.

Challenge

The project works with orphans and vulnerable children in the Bulawayo and Matabeleland Provinces of Zimbabwe to tackle problems surrounding lack of formal identity registration. Almost one third of Zimbabwean children do not possess a birth certificate. This creates a barrier which prevents children exercising many of their basic human rights, and stops them from enrolling in school and sitting formal examinations.

Solution

In association with our project delivery partner, Trinity Project, the project will provide free legal services and raise awareness of the socio-cultural issues surrounding the lack of birth registration for orphans and vulnerable children. Through this process, thousands of children will be assisted to register, enrol in primary education, and access inheritance and government support which will allow them to finance their education and bring them out of poverty.

Long-Term Impact

The project works very closely with a number of local organisations, such as Child Protection Committees, schools, churches, and relevant government departments. As such, we are building the capacity of other organisations to deal with these problems when the project comes to an end. In addition, by raising awareness in schools, and by allowing children to participate actively in the project, the issue of lack of birth registration should not become a problem for future generations.
