New rescues, delivering aid to earthquake victims and a broken car

By Pommelien Da Silva Cosme | Grants and Corporate Sponsorship Coordinator

First of all, a very happy new year! We hope that 2024 will be kind to you and that we can continue to build our community together for a better world for all animals.

During the past four months, our shelter and team has been overwhelmed with aid requests for injured animals as well as communities affected by the earthquake. It's safe to safe that 2023 was anything but an easy year for us. However, we did our very best to help where possible and thanks to you and our GlobalGiving community, we raised almost $11,000 this past year - so thank YOU.

In October and December, we carried out several field missions to deliver aid to High Atlas communities affected by the earthquake that happened on 8th September 2023. We received lots of request for fodder to support livestock from community members in the High Atlas mountains, since the majority of animal food supplies and fodder have been lost due to the earthquake. During the past months, we have delivered 1100 bales of dried alfalfa hay, which is loaded with protein and healthy fats, to animals in affected communities including donkeys, mules, sheep, goats, and cattle.

Meanwhile at the shelter, we have welcomed dozens of new rescues since September. Many of our new residents are victims of road traffic accidents such as little puppy PF696 and female cat CF803 who broke their legs after being hit by a car, and poor boy DM721 who broke his jaw due to another car accident. These are just a few examples of animals that have arrived at our shelter in painful conditions these past months.

In addition, we managed to rescue five baby kittens who were abandoned near our local fish market and left to fend for themselves. The youngest 3 were just so very small and they would have most certainly died without help. Speaking of babies, we also took in an abandoned infant donkey who is slowly integrating to the group of equines we are taking care of.

Unfortunately, we had a major setback when our rescue car broke down early December. It is beyond repair and we are doing the best we can to continue our rescue operations and vet trips, but we would be lying if we said it hasn’t been one of our biggest worries and hopes to acquire a new car. We hope we can count on the support of our GlobalGiving community to continue our work.

Thanks to your support so far, we have been able to provide vital veterinary treatment and medical care to over 40 new rescues. Not to mention, we have been able to buy food for all our 550 animals at the shelter, which is the most basic care we need to provide to our furry friends. We are forever grateful for your generosity.

Until our next report, you can follow us on Instagram for daily updates. Thank you for being here.
