Help to build a school, educate and empower 30 children with intellectual disabilities in Mende sub county Uganda were most children with disabilities continue to be excluded from educational opportunities. School authorities deny these children access to their schools saying that their disability is severe and cannot be managed. This leaves them at the lowest social strata. Our Foundation is raising money to complete the construction the first inclusive school in Mende sub-county.
Although the government of Uganda introduced introduced inclusive education in 1997, only 9% of the school aged girls and boys with disabilities who attend school compared with a national average of 92% of their counterparts. Stigma is very deeply rooted in society to the extent that even parents with disabled children do not want to take them to school. In Mende sub-county alone where the project is located, there is NO single school that caters for their needs.
This project will serve over 7 villages that make up Mende sub-county; And it will be a long awaited answer to the vulnerable parents and guardians who are in most cases are abandoned and neglected single mothers. Therefore, over 30 children who are currently denied access to education opportunities due to their disabilities, will for the first time attend school. This will help in creating an inclusive society.
The success of the project will lead to an inclusive society that will help children and adults with special needs to achieve their full potential and aspirations in Mende sub-county Wakiso district.
