Late last year, CANVAS sent a team of writers, photographers and artists to the island of Palawan to learn about and document the culture of the Tagbanuas, one of the oldest indigenous tribes in the Philippines. We partnered with the ECOFISH (Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries) Project of USAID, and were hosted by three local communities for a week. The CANVAS team listened and probed as elders and leaders of the Tagbanuas shared their history, culture, dreams, hopes and everyday lives.
“Panyaan: Three Tales of the Tagbanua” is the fruit of this creative process. The three original children’s stories that make up this book, while fictional, are all based on the traditions, surroundings and heritage of the Tagbanuas. The artworks that brought them to life are similarly inspired by the patterns, colors and feel of the gorgeous islands, waters and communities of Palawan. Each tale is different, and yet all are rooted in stories that have been handed from generation to generation of proud Tagbanuas.
We will be launching PANYAAN this May, and, in large part because of your continuing and generous support, will be printing 3,000 copies for donation and distribution to children in poor communities and public schools all over the country. Meanwhile, the ECOFISH Project will also be paying for another 2,000 copies which will be used directly for and by the Tagbanua communities.
We will be sure to keep you updated on this and our other activities to help Filipino children to learn to love books.
In the meantime, we'll take this opportunity to share with you some more pictures of supporters continuing to give away books to children all over the country.
We'll never tire of thanking you all, and remembering that all these would not have been possible without all of you.
THANK YOU!!! :-)
