We are happy to report that our total number of book donations to children all over the country has reached 521,968! In the second quarter, we gave away 2,234 books, 431 of which went to 42 libraries in cities and reading centers in communities.
New Learning Hub for Struggling Readers in Leyte
Reading comprehension, or understanding and making meaning from what we read, is a vital part of a love for reading. The educators of Guinciaman Elementary School found that their learners can read aloud, recognize text, and read at a pace, but they cannot always understand what they are reading.
To supplement teaching in classroom setups, Project HINGYAP launched a reading program to support struggling readers and help them become independent. This reading program aims to make the school library an active space where its learners will dive into reading books. Activities include reading sessions with teachers and peers.
A variety of our activity books were given to 205 learners. The books were theirs to take home and practice reading with, and a set of our hardbound storybooks was donated to the Learning Hub.
Empowering girls through stories
The National University Clark Community Extension and Alaya Women's Center partnered for a donation drive dedicated to the daughters of survivors of sexual exploitation in Angeles, Pampanga. A set of CANVAS books was donated to Alaya, and sixteen girls were the very first to read them.
Tina*, one of the girls, said that the book Safe Space: Pambatang Gabay sa Gawaing Online inspired her to create a book about the experience of women in the online world.
Art appreciation sparks interest in reading
La Belle Queña, a local brand of wearable art, gave back to their community in Parañaque. 100 copies of I am the Change in Climate Change and Safe Space: Pambatang Gabay sa Gawaing Online, accompanied by sets of school supplies, were given to the learners of Sun Valley Elementary School. The kids also colored away
Jude*, one of the learners, said, “Hindi po ako marunong magbasa pero ako ay natutuwa sa litrato ng CANVAS. Kailangan ko ng tulong upang maintidihan ang mga leksyon ibinabahagi dito.” (I don’t know how to read, but I enjoyed the images in the CANVAS [books]. I need help to understand the lessons they share here.)
