Challenge

As a result of the war in South Sudan, many people fled as refugees while others are internally displaced. During the war, water points are destroyed. Because of the ongoing peace process, many people are returning to their areas in Yei while their water points are destroyed with high risk of contamination forcing them to drink from open water sources which cause water borne diseases. NID will repair 40 boreholes to ensure that there is clean water supply to reduce the risks diseases.

Solution

The returnees and the internally displaced persons have lost their belongings and livelihoods meaning they are not able to repair their water points. Through the repair of the 40 boreholes, the returnees, internally displaced persons and the host community will have access to clean water reducing the risks of water borne diseases like diarrhea, typhoid, cholera and dysentery which may cause death as the returnees may not have access to medical facilities. This will improve their living standard.

Long-Term Impact

To ensure sustainability, NID will train 10 technicians, 20 community hygiene promoters and 40 water user committees consisting of 5 members each. Community leaders like chiefs and county authorities will be trained to ensure that there is continuous operation and maintenance of the repaired boreholes.
