Rafiki Autumn Update

By Hannah O'Riordan | Project Leader

A lot of transformation has happened in the lives of the girls during this quarter for both intakes. The January 2017 intake finished off their specialized training and will be graduating in December, with several already having found employment or started their own business. Of the June intake, 32 girls have completed the first three months of training and commenced their specialized courses in catering, nursing, teaching, design and cosmetology.

Extra-curricular activities this quarter included a careers day, attended by teachers and representative of our external course providers who helped trainees to understand the role and importance of each profession. Former Rafiki graduates also gave inspiring and confident talks on what they learned at the centre and how this has helped them in life, showing the transformation since they enrolled at Rafiki some years ago. The HIV testing

There was also an educational trip to Domboshava, where students learned about Zimbabwean culture, enjoying art, music, dance, games and activities and visiting natural landmarks. It was clear that for some students this was the only respite they have in their lives to relax and behave like young people. The staff found this very moving and many of the girls requested more activities like this to be incorporated into the course. In the same month, a former board member of the Rafiki Girls Centre invited all students to her house for a special meal and a movie night, which many of the girls found very inspirational and enjoyable.

The biggest transformation of all is perhaps for Rafiki itself!

The centre is excited to announce that it will be expanding to double its capacity in response to the growing need and demand for its services; this expansion will enable Rafiki to take on increased numbers of students and specifically, to be able to reach out to vulnerable single mothers as well as vulnerable girls. As part of this exciting growth, the centre hopes to recruit new full-time staff, increased resources and equipment, and new external organisations to run accredited courses for its students.

We appreciate the financial contribution that we are receiving from ZET’s supporters and donors, and hope you will be able to continue to support us at this vital turning point for Rafiki to support even more vulnerable young women to transform their lives.
