Since opening on October 16, the new XSProject Library and Student Center located at the Cirendeu garbage dump in Jakarta has been a hub of activity. Our staff has been collecting, sorting and cataloging donated books to fill the library shelves. There are books for almost every reading level and interest. Tables and chairs are on their way but for now the children are happy to just sit on the floor and read.
Ibu Bedah, who lives at the trash picker community, is our new Librarian and in charge of the reading programs. She knows the types of books the students enjoy and helps them select stories. For the moment, the Center is open just three afternoons a week. Since this is where the students in the XSEducation program go to do their homework and get help if they need it, a tutor will be joining Ibu Behah on the staff soon and the Center will be open longer hours.
Future plans include storytelling time and educational games with themes that include transportation, animals, geography and number games.
Since opening, almost all the books in the library have already been read. Still, the students go to Ibu Bedah’s house and ask her to open the Center early so they can go read and study. It is great to know that this is a place where the children really like to be.
We need many more books to fill the library as well as magazines and educational puzzles. While we continue to receive donated books, our goal is to add 500 new books to the library before the end of this year. We will try to raise about $2,500 for both fiction and non-fiction books.
XSProject will be partnering with GlobalGiving again this year on GIVING TUESDAY - November 29th. There will be matching funds available from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation so your contribution to XSProject will be matched. With your support, today or on GIVING TUESDAY, we can meet our goal and provide an exceptional reading program to the children at Jakarta’s Cirendu trash picker community.
